Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu?

Source: www.imdb.com
I somehow have the feeling that I have seen quite a lot of French films in the sneak lately, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. So although Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu? wasn't a movie that came up with any revolutionary new ideas it was very entertaining.

Claude and his wife are the proud conservative parents of four daughters. Their hopes are that their daughters marry acceptable catholic Frenchmen. This info and the fact that this is a comedy movie should be sufficient information that things do not exactly go as planned...

Although the plot is not the most original one in movie history the film is very well made with some very good performances, and I'm sure that most people will have a good time in the cinema.

The Signal

Truth to be told, I can't really say if The Signal is a good or bad movie because I was quite undecided about whether I liked it myself or not.

Source: www.imdb.com
Three friends pick up a strange signal so they try to find it and also the person who sent it. Well, things get a tiny little bit weird after that, so I just suggest that you check the movie out for yourselves if your into Sci-Fi and thrillers because it's really not that bad.

The things that really bugged me about this movie were first of all that in the first 15-20 minutes I had absolutely no idea what the movie was about. It starts quite slowly and I had no idea whatsoever where it was going. However, after that it became more obvious. In fact, it became so obvious that we could already figure out what would happen in the end...if you have seen more of this type of movies it shouldn't be too difficult to put the clues together. Another point were the frequent flashbacks in the movie which are not a bad idea in themselves, but there were too many of them and they also kept showing the same ones. And on top of that, I had no idea what they were supposed to tell me.

All in all, the movie wasn't too bad and if you're into this genre it should be well worth watching.

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet

Source: www.imdb.com
On June 23 The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (Die Karte meiner Träume) was once again a reminder for me why I like watching sneaks so much. It's a movie that I probably wouldn't have seen after reading about it, but I actutally enjoyed it very much.

T.S. Spivet is a 10 year old boy who enjoys nothing more than science. After sending in his idea for a perpetuum mobile ("Perpetual motion is motion that continues indefinitely without any external source of energy" - thanks to Wikipedia!) he is invited to Washington by the Smithsonian in order to receive the renown Baird Award. However, this is a journey he has to make on his own because his family with whom he is living on a farm in Montana just don't seem to understand his fascination with science.

Admittedly, the movie has some weird moments in my opinion. I think I sighed many times over T.S. Spivet's sudden outbursts of truly nerdy scientific facts which always seemed to happen at the most inconvenient times possible. There are also some scenes which seem very confusing and which need some seconds for you to understand, but I don't want to spoil too much at this point, you can see for yourselves if you watch the movie.

Apart from these little things The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet is a very enjoyable movie with a very intelligent plot, very good acting and a great soundtrack which was difficult for me to get out of my head.

Walk of Shame

Well, I've seen better movies than Walk of Shame (Sneak: June 16), which is going to be released under the title Mädelsabend in Germany, but I've certainly also seen much worse movies. For me there are really good and intelligent movies on the one hand, but then there also exist two other kinds of movies. One of them are movies that are both stupid and not in the least bit funny when it comes to what I like.
Source: www.imdb.com
Please don't let me relive the anguish I had with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues because there was nothing legendary at all about this. However, I know that many people who saw the film with me enjoyed the film and maybe you did, too. Then there are movies who might just be as equally stupid but which at least manage to make me laugh. Luckily, Walk of Shame belonged to the latter category.

It is Meghan Miles' dream to reach the next level in her anchorwoman career by leaving her local news channel and joining a high-profile channel. In order to do that she has to put in a convincing performance during the next news. However, things get get awry when after a girls' night out she literally has to go the walk of shame.

The film is nothing special, but it kept me entertained almost throughout the entire movie. Nonetheless, I had the advantage that I saw it as a sneak and only had to pay €5 for my ticket. You should really think about whether this kind of movies suits you and whether you want to pay the normal ticket price for it.

The Movie Sequel Flood

In recent years a new trend seems to have been happening in Hollywood. It looks like the writers of the dream factory are lacking creativity. Each year we hit a new high in terms of prequels, sequels, remakes and spin-offs, or in other words: Hollywood film-makers seem to have forgotten how to make good, successful single movies. In 2012 the website www.denofgeek.com compiled a list of 105 movie sequels that were currently in works at the time. In view of such a high number it should be considered if a new trend away from too many sequels and remakes wouldn't be advisable.

One of the reasons for this is that many of the movie franchises are already completely oversaturated. After a trilogy in the 1970s/1980s the Star Wars saga experienced a revival in the 1990s/2000s with a prequel trilogy and on top of that both a Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie and TV series. Nonetheless, two more Star Wars movies were announced in 2013 with the first one being scheduled for release in 2016. Another example would be the constant flow of new superhero movies. DC and Marvel have been making it really hard for the viewers to count how many times Superman and Batman (both with constant reboots throughout the decades) or Iron Man and Spiderman (of which the second trilogy within twelve years is now being made) or others have been appearing on the big screen. To be fair, it has to be said that also the film market is being regulated by both demand and supply and there seems to be enough demand, i.e. viewers of the specific movies, so that the film-makers provide enough supply.

An argument that can be heard many times is that sequels or remakes 'destroy the original'. Is this really true? Star Wars fans keep saying that the new trilogy is not nearly as good as the first one. Some Indiana Jones think that the fourth film should have never happened and the series should have ended with the three 1980s movies. It can be neither said that this is right or wrong because everybody has his own taste. There are also many cases in which remakes have received much praise and are regarded as much better than the original. It will probably never be possible to prove or to disprove this argument, however, it is definitely something to keep in mind.

Another point that might play into this is the role of Hollywood as one big, commercial industry.
Like all other industries Hollywood and all the people working for them want to make money. They know that those movie franchises are hugely popular and successful with the cinema audience so they decide to make more of them. On top of that, the box office figures prove the film-makers right in the majority of cases. Many sequels and remakes make even more money than the original. It is clear that many movies only exist because film-makers have seen the opportunity to use a franchise's success in order to make even more money with the next movie. However, as long as vast crowds still flood cinemas in order to see these movies the situation is unlikely to change in the near future nor do movie fans seem to be bothered by it.

All in all, there doesn't seem to be much reason to believe that the flood of sequels and remakes will stop any time soon. Movie viewers will continue to see them and as long as this happens film- makers won't stop making them. And to be honest, in the majority of cases they are very enjoyable. After all, this is what counts in the end because we want to feel entertained when we dive into the fantastic world of movies

Cuban Fury

The first moments of Cuban Fury June 2 seemed to be quite dooming. Dancing feet and a talk about Salsa... You will understand my feelings about this when you keep in mind that I go to the sneak every and it feels like each week for at least two or three months I have been seeing the trailer for the new Step Up movie. I honestly have to admit that this movie looks nowhere near promising for me. Admittedly, I haven't seen the first parts of it and to be quite frank, I have no intention of doing so anytime so. The target audience of Step Up seem to be teenage girls and the trailer already hints at the less than perfect dubbing and at jokes that I am sure are supposed to be funny...just not for me...

Source: www.imdb.com

Anyway, this post is about Cuban Fury not Step Up. So after the initial shock that the movie wasn't going nearly as bad as I had feared and I actually liked it very much. The main character Bruce is portrayed by British actor Nick Frost whom I had first seen in Hot Fuzz (the second part of Frost's and Simon Pegg's Cornetto trilogy) and whom I consider to be a very good comedy actor. On a side note, because it was the first Monday in June this was an OV sneak. I have to say that I always prefer seeing the original version over watching a dubbed version. With Cuban Fury I had some difficulty to understand everything at times. However, this did in no way diminish the fun I had with this movie. I don't think I will be too relevant for German audiences anyway, as most cinemas will probably show the dubbed version.

The movie itself is quite charming. Young Bruce gave up on his promising Salsa career after being teased about it. Now present Bruce takes out his Salsa shoes again and steps up (oh, well) to the dance floor once more in order to - well, as you might guess - impress a woman. Hereby Frost delivers quite a good performance making it a very enjoyable movie. If you like comedy movies with a bit of a romantic touch you might really consider seeing Cuban Fury.

Brick Mansions

Unfortunately, I didn't post a movie review last week so I have some catching up to do.

On May 26 the sneak audience including me saw the movie Brick Mansions. The most memorable thing about the movie is certainly that it is Paul Walker's last completed movie before his death in November 2013. Apart from that it is a solid action movie that is quite entertaining but doesn't really come up with any new ideas. It could be considered as something of a mix between Fast and Furious and any ordinary action movie.

Source: www.imdb.com

The movie, directed by Camille Delamarre and written by Luc Besson, follows Walker's character undercover cop Damien Collier through a secluded and dangerous Detroit neighborhood in search of a stolen bomb. He therefore teams up with an ex-con (David Belle) who knows the neighborhood better than he does. If this plot sounds familiar to some of you the reason might be that it's a reboot of the 2004 movie District 13. The plot and characters/character names are not the only things that are almost completely identical to the original. Luc Besson already provided the script for the original and Belle even reprises his role from the 2004 movie, now called Lino instead of Leïto.

Altogether Brick Mansions is a movie that Paul Walker fans will want to see. If you're looking for some 90 minutes of entertainment and are okay with a standard action movie this is the right film for you. If you rather prefer something more in depth you may rather watch something different.

The Battle of the Five Armies

It will probably be old news for you, but I'd still like to give you this bit of film news. The text is something I wrote for my journalistic writing course at university, so don't be confused by the writing style.

New Title for Last 'Hobbit' Installment

Jackson Decides for Title Change to Fit Film Saga's Story Line

In what might be a surprising move for the fans of dwarves, elves, orcs and hobbits, director Peter Jackson announced a title change for the third and last installment of his 'Hobbit' saga. Instead of “The Hobbit: There And Back Again” movie fans will now be seeing “The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies” later this year.

Jackson explained his decision by saying that the original title would have rather fit a two film telling of Tolkien's famous novel. The second part would have told of Bilbo's arrival at and departure from Erebor. 'But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced - after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.', Jackson said, referring to the second part of his trilogy.

The German title of the movie has been changed accordingly with “Der Hobbit: Die Schlacht der Fünf Heere” replacing “Der Hobbit: Hin und Zurück”. However, “There And Back Again” is certainly not completely off the table and might be used as a title of the whole trilogy and appear on box sets or other merchandise.

The last part of Jackson's “Hobbit” trilogy is scheduled for release in theaters on December 17, 2014. It stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch among others

What's a Sneak??

Peeks at Sneaks...you may rightfully wonder what this title has to with movies, so let me give you a short introduction to my blog. I will basically review movies (the so called Sneaks), but I will not only tell you about the movies itself but also about my experiences at the cinema while seeing those movies. Please keep in mind that this involves to some extent my own personal preferences so even if I didn't like the movie, it may just be the right one for you.
Now, a Sneak is a weekly event at our local cinema, Cinestar, but also exists in many other cities throughout Germany.
The three main characteristics of a Sneak are:
  • costing only €5 watching a Sneak is considerably cheaper than watching an average movie at the cinema
  • however, you don't which movie they're going to show until the movie actually starts meaning that every Sneak is going to be a surprise
  • all you know is that they show a movie which hasn't been released in Germany yet
  • once a month there is also an Original Version (OV) Sneak, but don't worry, all of them have been movies in English so far
The Sneak also has some other benefits apart from being able to see movies for a rather low amount of money:
  • you have the chance to win vouchers, books, DVDs and other things by answering questions about the last movie correctly or by correctly guessing the movie they're going to show on Facebook
  • if you retain five Sneak tickets you can get a free ticket if you show up the sixth time (if you do this a ticket would basically only cost €4)
I also managed to convince some of my friends to come to the Sneaks with me and our group now has a considerable size at the OV Sneaks.

Well, that's all for now, don't hesitate to ask if you want to know more about my blog, the Sneaks or something else.
